Cornwall Goat Keepers Association

Our first magazine of 2013 and I hope that all of your kidding experiences have been or will be successful. Some of you, I know, have planned to kid later. The weather will be kinder to you then and the grass growing, possibly with sunshine!
In my last ‘Thoughts’ I asked for any good tips around animal husbandry but none have followed. Are you all too busy to write and share your good tips with other members?
I have just returned from another trip to The Gambia and the ducks that I mentioned, previously, have gone. I think two-legged thieves are the culprits as call ducks are ‘fancy’ birds, likely to have a good market out there! I will keep to my cross-bred bantams........
At our AGM I said that our goat club is a success and it IS compared with others, so I do ask you to support us and the committee. Likewise with the shows- many are closing the goat sections due to lack of support and the phrase comes to mind “use it or lose it”. I know that many of our members do not show their goats and you are just as important to us as those that do. Please do write and say how we can get you involved.
This year we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, since the club began, so there will be golden rosettes at our shows. I will miss not being able to win one....... unless I can borrow a goat to show !! These rosettes will be so special.

The Cornwall Goatkeepers Association was founded in 1964, by a group of goat keepers who wanted to get together with other like minded people. It is affiliated with the British Goat Society. Members can expect four issues of the Cloven Hoof the club magazine, our way of keeping in touch with our members.

The club organises three shows a year, 1st the Spring Show in May. 2nd The Kernow Dairy Goat Show in June this is run as a back to back show following on from THE Royal Cornwall Agricultural Show at the Wadebridge Show Grounds. These are run by individual members of the committee, working within the limits of the ever changing Legislation.

We try to attend as many publicity events as possible to spread the word on good goat welfare. We try to cater for all breeds of goats, as Camborne Show in July, has an ever growing pet section, with most breeds represented. Our third show includes the entire male of all ages, at the Male and Youngstock Show.

The A G M is held at Playing Place Hall every October, when everyone is invited to attend.
